Wellness Centre in Sandton: Meet Your Wellness Navigator

Wellness Centre in Sandton: Why Your First Appointment Is With a Wellness Navigator

Most people arrive at a wellness centre knowing something is wrong, and not knowing who they should see.

Is it a doctor? A dietitian? A physiotherapist? A psychologist? Being asked to choose means making a clinical judgement before anyone has listened to you. Many people end up choosing nothing at all.

That is why Balance Point Wellness Centre, a multidisciplinary wellness centre in Sandton, is introducing a role built for exactly that moment: the Wellness Navigator.

What a wellness centre should do for you

A good health and wellness centre brings different disciplines under one roof. At Balance Point Wellness Centre, our practitioners include general practice, psychology, dietetics, physiotherapy and IV therapy, among others.

Having everyone in one building is only half of it. The other half is making sure you reach the right person, in the right order, and that someone notices if you drift away. That is the gap wellness navigation fills.

What is a Wellness Navigator?

A Wellness Navigator is a registered professional who helps you understand what you are experiencing, work out what help is appropriate, reach the right practitioner, and stay engaged with that help over time.

The role comes down to four things: understand, guide, refer and follow up.

It is just as important to be clear about what a navigator does not do. Your navigator:

  • is not a doctor, a psychologist or a psychiatrist
  • does not diagnose you, or tell you what a symptom means
  • does not interpret blood results, hormone panels or any other clinical test
  • does not prescribe, adjust or advise on medication
  • does not decide whether a programme is suitable or safe for you

That last decision always belongs to a practitioner. Every programme at Balance Point Wellness Centre starts with an appointment with the practitioner who leads it, and they make the call. Every program starts with a navigator consultation and Evolt Scan.

The idea itself is not new. Patient navigation began in 1990 at Harlem Hospital in New York, developed by Dr Harold P. Freeman. He saw that people were often let down not by a lack of care, but by how hard it was to find their way through the system that offered it. Wellness navigation adapts that idea to a broader, more preventive setting.

One title, two doors

Navigation at Balance Point Wellness Centre comes in two channels. You choose one when you book, and your navigator will tell you which channel they practise in at your first appointment.

 Mental and emotionalPhysical and functional
Your navigator isA counsellor, registered with the ASCHP as a Specialist Wellness Counsellor or with the HPCSA as a Registered CounsellorA physiotherapist or biokineticist, registered with the HPCSA
They help directly withStress, burnout, mood, coping, adjustment and workplace wellbeingPain, injury, movement, physical function, activity and ergonomics
What they refer onMovement screening, exercise and rehabilitation guidance, workstation checksCounselling, psychoeducation and debriefing

Someone arriving with back pain and someone arriving with burnout should meet the same standard of navigation. Where part of what you need sits in the other channel, you are referred there rather than given a watered-down version of it.

How wellness navigation works

  1. Book and choose your channel. Pick the channel closest to what brought you in.
  2. Tell us your story before you arrive. You will receive a short Consent and Scope form and a Your Health Background form. Your navigator is not assessing this, and will not tell you whether you qualify for anything. The purpose is simple: the practitioner you see is not hearing your history for the first time in the room. If you are unsure about something, write "not sure". If you would rather talk about it in person, write "to discuss".
  3. Your consultation. Your navigator listens to what brought you here and takes the time to understand it. They explain what each of our programmes involves, how long it runs, what it costs and what it will ask of you. Here you also complete the first health data collection, from our body composition scale, so we can confidently refer based on whats actually happening in your body.
  4. The right practitioner, properly briefed. Your navigator makes sure the right practitioner has heard your story before you walk into their room.
  5. Follow-up. Your navigator arranges your appointments and stays in contact with you for as long as your programme runs.

Your body composition scan, explained in plain terms

Navigation can include an Evolt 360 body composition scan. It measures body fat, muscle mass, body water and related figures such as your basal metabolic rate.

Your navigator goes through the report with you and explains what each measurement shows. It is a walk-through of your own numbers, not a medical assessment or a diagnosis. If anything should be looked at more closely, your navigator will say so, and it is taken to a medical consultation.

There is also a reason we care about when you are scanned. Body composition readings move with hydration, recent food, alcohol, exercise timing and cycle phase. Ongoing navigation fixes the day, the time and a pre-scan protocol, so a reading in month six can be compared fairly with month one.

Once-off or ongoing

You can start with a single session: a scan on its own, a scan with a navigator walk-through, or a scan with a walk-through and a screening in your chosen channel. Single sessions do not include follow-up.

If you want someone alongside you over time, there are three navigation subscriptions:

  • Basic: a monthly scan on a standing slot, gone through with a navigator who knows your history, plus a screening every quarter.
  • Active: everything in Basic, and your navigator builds and runs your schedule across the centre. Appointments are booked, sequenced and moved for you, and results are chased and collated.
  • Concierge: weekly contact, with both channels held at once and a named primary navigator.

There is no minimum term. We recommend three months, because that is the shortest period in which the measurement becomes worth something.

Navigation in practice: the Metabolic Health programme

The clearest example of navigation at Balance Point Wellness Centre is our Metabolic Health programme.

It is a nine-month, doctor-led programme with medical supervision throughout. It brings together clinical consultations, blood panels, body composition scans, dietitian and physiotherapy consultations and IV nutritional support. Your suitability is decided by the doctor at enrolment.

Every person on the programme has one named Wellness Navigator for the full nine months, at no extra charge. Contact is weekly in the first month, fortnightly in months two and three, and monthly after that. Your navigator handles the logistics and keeps you connected to the team, while the doctor leads the clinical side. Nine months is a long time to hold a plan together on your own. The navigator is there so you do not have to. See how the Metabolic Health programme works

Your privacy

What you discuss with your navigator is confidential and stored securely in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). It is shared with practitioners inside the centre only where it is relevant to your care.

There is one limit. If your navigator becomes concerned about your safety or someone else's, they must involve the appropriate professional, and they will tell you if that happens.

If you attend through an employer or a scheme, they receive participation information only: that you attended, never what you discussed. Find out more about corporate wellness at Balance Point Wellness Centre.

Start with someone who listens first

If you are not sure where to start, that is exactly where a navigator starts too. Book a visit, or explore the Metabolic Health programme.

Find your balance.

This article is general information, not medical advice. If you or someone else needs urgent help, contact emergency services. Our booking and messaging channels are not monitored for emergencies.

Is a Wellness Navigator a doctor?

No. Your navigator is a registered counsellor, or a registered physiotherapist or biokineticist, depending on the channel. They do not diagnose, treat or prescribe.

Will my navigator tell me what my test results mean?

Your navigator will go through your body composition report with you and explain what each measurement shows. Blood results, hormone panels and other clinical tests belong to the doctor.

Which channel should I choose?

Choose the one closest to what brought you in.

  • Mental and emotional covers stress, burnout, mood and coping.
  • Physical and functional covers pain, injury, movement and physical function.

If something sits in the other channel, you will be referred.

Can I message my navigator between visits?

Messaging between visits is included on the Active and Concierge subscriptions, answered on weekdays during business hours. It is not a crisis line.
